%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Florian%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Buchwald%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22The%20expertise%20reversal%20effect%20occurs%20when%20a%20learner%27s%20expertise%20moderates%20design%20principles%20such%20as%20the%20redundancy%20principle%20%28i.e.%2C%20redundant%20information%20should%20be%20excluded%20rather%20than%20included%29%20derived%20from%20the%20cognitive%20load%20theory.%20Although%20this%20effect%20is%20supported%20by%20numerous%20experiments%2C%20indicating%20an%20overall%20large%20effect%20size%2C%20a%20variety%20of%20explanations%20have%20been%20proposed.%20The%20present%20experiment%20tested%20a%20cognitive%20load%20and%20a%20motivational%20explanation%20with%20104%20students%2C%20who%20reported%20a%20lack%20of%20experience%20in%20the%20presented%20instructional%20contents.%20They%20spent%20about%2030%20min%20with%20the%20instructional%20material%20to%20learn%20fundamental%20concepts%20about%20the%20gradient%20descent%20%28a%20mathematical%20optimization%20algorithm%29%2C%20and%20with%20a%20retention%20and%20transfer%20test%20used%20as%20dependent%20measures.%20Each%20learner%20was%20randomly%20assigned%20to%20one%20cell%20of%20a%202%20%28either%20novices%20or%20experts%20introduced%20to%20through%20the%20instructional%20design%20presented%20previously%29%20%5Cu00d7%202%20%28either%20with%20or%20without%20additional%20text%20explaining%20the%20animations%29%20between-subjects%20factorial%20design.%20The%20expertise%20reversal%20effect%20concerning%20the%20redundancy%20principle%20was%20replicated.%20Novices%20receiving%20additional%20text%20scored%20higher%20on%20retention%20and%20transfer%20than%20did%20novices%20without%20additional%20text%2C%20while%20this%20result%20was%20reversed%20for%20experts.%20Results%20suggest%20that%20this%20effect%20can%20be%20explained%20by%20the%20learner%27s%20cognitive%20load%20differences%20rather%20than%20overall%20motivation%20differences.%20Furthermore%2C%20a%20partial%20overlap%20was%20found%20between%20the%20motivational%20subdimension%2C%20%5Cu201cprobability%20of%20success%2C%5Cu201d%20and%20a%20cognitive%20load%20measure.%20On%20the%20practical%20side%2C%20instructional%20designers%20should%20consider%20the%20learner%27s%20level%20of%20expertise%20and%20their%20cognitive%20load%20when%20applying%20design%20principles.%20Further%20implications%20for%20adaptive%20learning%20environments%20are%20discussed.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222011%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1037%5C%2Fa0022243%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221939-2192%28Electronic%29%3B1076-898X%28Print%29%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22FVGKH4CW%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222014-06-20T12%3A00%3A14Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
